    Hi guys,

I have persuaded my boss to NOT buy a Landrover discovery and to come over to the VAG side and get an A4 diesel. Together we have narrowed it down to a A4 s-line 3.0 or 2.0 (170) tdi quattro as the spec to get. With out doing rushed research (might be buying one this wkend) what are the common/expensive faults to look out for that can be spotted during a viewing and also things like cambelt/chain replacement intervals/cost etc? Basically any pointers would be massivly appreciated :) Thanks in advance, Travis

Go for the 3.0TDi. It's a lovely engine.

cheers for the guide heads up, i did a quick search for common faults but didnt have time to sift through the posts. my boss wants a cheap as pos typically lol. He is prepared to hit £9000 for the right car. He is waiting on a seller to get back to him about a 3.0 tdi quattro sline 80k miles fully loaded for only 8 grand! other than that its a 140bhp 2.0 tdi lacking in options for £7500 :(

Tricky as the 2 models are worlds apart - if my MD had a 3 litre, no doubt we'd be having a repeat of the top speed run that we did in his 328i touring a few years back at 5am on an empty Autobahn...

Been running a B7 3.0 TDI Auto Avant for the last 6 months. It's a great car and is one of the best for being an all rounder.I've had it towing the track car on a trailer across Europe through to a full Ikea bedroom flat packed in the back - just popped the seats down and job done!

No faults to report in that time other than a flickering xenon light (probably balast) and the rear side window heated elements not receiving power.

Fuel economy wise I'm now averaging 36mpg, or 460 miles per 60 litres. Not bad at all.

It's a great engine. Pulls like a train and power on-tap when needed. Paddle shift is quick, too.
