They were nice bends too..would of been nice at speed!

    72mpg is impressive.

Clarkson was on the Dave (repeat from 03 i think) in a A8 4.0tdi. Gorgeous machine, london to edinborough return on a single tank of fuel. Tdi is a serious piece of kit.

Mine only does 40-42 on average!  It's meant to be 43.  I do get 44-8 sometimes though, hit 50 once too!

Stevee - yeah, you should still get around the same MPG with a remap. The 170s are just a little thirstier. Like Adey says though - great fun to drive! I'm getting an average of mid to low 40's but she needs servicing soon so it should see an improvement.

Yours is a quattro though Ben......presumably that makes it a bit thirsty.

estimated around 175-180 not had it rr yet though so cant be definate, i drove down the road i use every day for work so i know what mine will do down there every time i stretch its legs, and the tt was exactly the same!! even let my mate drive it back to see if he could better it and it was exactly the same! was happy with the result, especially when i put mpg up on the dash and it read 22.5lol

lol you could never see that kind of figure. I bet the torque figures are prob higher on your car than the standard TT. That could be the main factor even though he has more  bhp. Imagine fueling twice as often...ouch

worst ive seen was 27 i think iirc and that was giving it big time hammer just after i got my exhaust fitted!!

the fuel was the one thing stopped me having tt/s3 i drive quick so i need something that shifts but gives decent mpg! any petrol you drive hard drinks it whereas you can travel fast in a tdi and not use much i love derv!!

Average MPG displays are easy to fabricate.

If you want to really prove something, post up a piccy of your miles to empty + miles driven to show your total tanks range.

I f can do 905 + 52 = 957 total range in  my great big heavy A6 Avant, I'm sure you lot could break the 1,000 mile barrier in your feather weight A4 and A3's !! Surprise

Well........how big is the fuel tank in the A6 avant? And the mileage count down is NEVER accurate. The only way is full to empty and refill....

    Totally agree.

That is why I always brim it and keep a very detailed spreadsheet.

Since owning the A6 and as of 13/06/09 I have (at a fill up on the 23/06/09, not updated the last fill up yet)....

Travelled 6840 miles (all figures below calculated as an average over this milage and 14 tank fills.)

The true average brim to brim MPG is 43.34

The MFD calculated total average MPG is 43.1

This gives an error of 0.27mpg whereby the MFD is under reading !! To me that is pretty damned accurate. Do you know that you can calibrate MFD in vagcom if your is not accurate?

The average tank range achieved measured over 14 tankfulls is 677 miles.

The tank does however hold 70 litres but that is offset by the weight of the vehicle. It is a PD 130 engine by the way.

Still reckon A4's and A3's could do much much better.

Im very suprised with the MFD!! I thought i would of been alot more out than that. The MFD on the A4 says longterm average is 48mpg.

On my last car B5.5 Pasat is was ok'ish but on my old MK4 Golf it was hopelessly wrong and over read by at least 5mpg.

Another plus side of keeping accurate records is that you know the miles left once the fuel light comes on, the A6 average being 67miles, so for safety I say 60.

Whats the best you've got on a eco run?

Dont quite know what you mean?

I get bored of hyper-miling at 50-60 mph and normally quite quickly revert to type which is hooning it along.

The best ever out of a tank so far in the A6 is a range of 747 miles (707 driven, 40 range)

As above though, short term average MPG's are really easy to get and I've seen 70+ in the Golf, Passat and the A6.

Feed some redex through her, make sure she's fully serviced.

I use to get 55mpg average at 70=80mph motorway miles and if i kept it at 70, could see late 50s and at 60mph, could see 60s!

Not sure what it actually did as i use to get bored and then boot it lol

    Interesting posts guys.

I used to have a Skoda Octavia TDI SLX (110hp) which I had remapped to about 150hp by Celtic Tuning and was extremely happy with this car. Very quick and still about 55mpg combined and could even get 70mpg if I drove like a granny. I now have an Audi A4 115PD also remapped by Celtic Tuning and have to say am disappointed. I'm sure the Skoda was quicker, most noticeably higher up the rev range, and would have left the Audi for dead I feel. Yes the 115PD has more low end grunt but it seems to fizzle out much quicker so making the remapped 110 a much more pleasant and sporty drive. A further disappointment with the PD is very significantly less miles per gallon. I'm averaging about 47mpg brim to brim and can only get an absolute max of about 53mpg on a long steady, flat cruise at 70mph. These figures are way short of manfacturers claims of over 60mpg extra-urban and 53mpg combined. The big difference to me between the 110 and the 115PD appears to be when the engine is under load, e.g up a slight incline on a motorway, and seems to be far more thirsty than the 110 in these instances.

Anyone else have similar experiences or have I just got a dud? What else could be the problems here?
