Cabriolet is a real Audi, and an especially exciting one at that. The
four-seater with the fabric top combines a sporty character with the
fascination of open-top driving, refined comfort, and great everyday
utility. Seven powerful engines, an agile suspension and a wide range
of high-end options make the new Audi model the most attractive
mid-range convertible. The top-of-the-line model of Audi’s new family
of convertibles is the S5 Cabriolet. The engine of the S5 Cabriolet is
the newly developed, supercharged three-liter V6 with gasoline direct
injection. Prices start at EUR 37,300 for the 1.8 TFSI with 118 kW (160
hp) and six-speed manual transmission. Delivery of the first A5
Cabriolet models will begin in the second quarter of 2009.

Like all open-top Audi models, the new A5
Cabriolet too has a classic fabric top – which endows it with a
striking silhouette of dynamic elegance. The lightweight softtop opens
in 15 seconds – and closes in 17 seconds. The fully automatic
open/close drive comes as standard. An acoustic top is optionally
available, which reduces wind noise almost to the hardtop level.

When
opened, the Audi A5 Cabriolet top folds down so effectively that very
little trunk space is used up – leaving 320 liters (11.3 cu ft) of
unused storage volume, clearly the best value in its field of
competitors. The softtop compartment lowers itself automatically when
the top is opened.

Equally useful is the fold-down rear seat
backrest with the large pass-through between the luggage space and the
interior, which increases the storage volume to a generous 750 liters
(26.49 cu. ft.).

Automatic seat belt extenders round out the
comfort in the interior. Neck-level heating is optionally available for
the front seats. The optional leather seats are coated with a special
layer to reduce solar heating. There is comfortable room for four
persons. The refined ambience combines with exemplary ergonomics to
convey an atmosphere of sporty elegance. Ultra-high-strength steels and
selective reinforcements of the body ensure maximal rigidity and crash
safety.

The A5 Cabriolet is being launched with three gasoline
engines and two diesel engines, with power outputs ranging from 132 kW
(180 hp) to 195 kW (265 hp). All five powerplants are fueled via direct
injection; four of them use turbocharging. Available power trains
include a six-speed manual transmission, the continuously variable
multitronic, and the lightning-fast, seven-speed S tronic.

In
addition to front-wheel drive, Audi also offers quattro permanent
all-wheel drive for the higher-power engines. The innovative sport
differential, which variably distributes the propulsive power between
the rear wheels, is optionally available to make quattro even more
dynamic and even safer.

Fascinating dynamics: Audi drive select
The
perfect addition to this technology package is the Audi drive select
vehicle dynamics system, which enables the driver to chose among three
different engine maps controlling the characteristics of the fuel feed,
the shifting points of the seven-speed S tronic and multitronic, and
the mode of operation of the servotronic steering system. If the MMI
operating system is installed, a fourth, freely programmable level is
also available.

Audi drive select is only available in
combination with one or more of three additional technologies – the
sport differential, the adaptive control for the shock absorbers, and
dynamic steering. This is an additional high-tech solution: Its
superposition gear varies the gear ratio as a function of the driving
speed by up to 100 percent.

The new Audi A5 Cabriolet features a
rich array of equipment, including 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic air
conditioning, and an audio system with a CD player. One of the
highlights among the optional equipment is the third-generation MMI
operating system, which provides many attractive navigation and
entertainment functions.

As the dynamic top-of-the-line model of
the new production series, the S5 Cabriolet occupies a very special
position. Its three-liter TFSI – a V6 with turbocharger – unfolds its
245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) of torque impressively: It
responds tenaciously to the throttle and delivers excellent driving
performance. The quattro drive, a sport suspension with 18-inch wheels
and a number of special equipment details underscore the athletic power
of the Audi S5 Cabriolet.

The exterior design
The
Audi A5 Cabriolet combines Audi’s progressive styling with the
fascination of an open-top car. The long engine hood, the sharp lines,
the sweep of the shoulder contour, the elegantly curved surfaces, the
large wheels, the distinctive front end, and the expressive tail all
interact to create a sculptural, sensuous whole. The A5 Cabriolet is
4.63 meters (15.19 ft) long and 1.85 meters (6.07 ft) wide, but only
1.38 meters (4.53 ft) tall: the sportiest proportions in its class.

The
styling of the front end is dominated by the single-frame grille, which
is flanked by large air intakes. The exquisite design of the headlights
makes them look like technical jewels. The daytime running lights of
the optional xenon plus headlights consist of LEDs. An aluminum molding
lends high gloss to the windshield frame.

The looks of the tail
end are sharpened by horizontal lines, broad tail lights, straight
tailpipes, and a distinctly colored diffuser insert. The trunk lid
bears an unobtrusive spoiler lip. The xenon plus headlight option comes
complete with LED taillights, which create a distinctive light pattern.

The convertible top
The
fabric top with the large glass rear window fits smoothly into the
design profile. This is one of several reasons why Audi preferred it to
a folding steel roof. What’s more, its construction is much lighter in
weight, which reduces the overall weight of the Cabriolet and lowers
its center of gravity. The outer skin of the top is available in a
choice of four colors, the inside in three.

The softtop
consists of three layers. The intermediate layer is a cushioning pad.
In the optional acoustic top, which reduces wind noise almost to
hardtop level, this is replaced by a foam layer up to 15 millimeters
(0.59 in) in thickness. The acoustic top comes with a ceiling light for
the rear seat – a solution usually only found in the topmost
convertible luxury segment.

In both versions, a hydraulic pump
and four operating cylinders that move the top are actuated when a
pushbutton on the central console or on the optional remote access
assistant is depressed. It takes 15 seconds to open the top, 17 seconds
to close it. Both actions can also be actuated while driving at up to
50 km/h (31.07 mph) – which makes driving much more comfortable.

When
opened, the top is retracted underneath a fixed cover, where it is
folded down into an extremely compact shape. Its storage compartment,
which automatically lowers itself into the trunk space, only takes up a
few centimeters in height – and only 60 liters (2.12 cu ft) of the 380
liters (13.42 cu ft) of luggage space. The remaining 320 liters (11.3
cu ft) with the top open are by far the best value among comparable
vehicles. What’s more, the low position of the loading lip makes
loading and unloading easier. The wind deflector, which is supplied as
standard, can be stored in the spare-wheel well to save space.

A
very convenient feature in the Audi A5 Cabriolet are the split folding
rear seat backrests. They can be easily unlocked by actuating levers in
the trunk and drop automatically onto the seat cushions. The standard
pass-though is 70 centimeters (27.56 in) wide. The loading space behind
the front seatback is 1.76 meters (69.29 in) long, providing a total
storage volume of 750 liters (26.49 cu ft).

The body
As
is typical of Audi models, the A5 Cabriolet has an extremely rigid
body. This is a prime reason for its precise driving performance, its
high comfort level, and its maximized crash safety.

In the
construction of the body-in-white, several innovative technologies are
used. A prime example are the ultra-high-strength steels with their
extremely high tensile strength, which Audi manufactures in-house using
hot forming. The front fenders of the A5 Cabriolet are made of aluminum
to lower the weight and to optimize axle load distribution. An enclosed
underbody improves the airflow and thereby the fuel efficiency.

A
whole array of additional reinforcement parts compensates for the
absence of a solid roof. They are located in the front section, in the
side skirts, in the windshield frame, and in the rear section. Located
between the interior and the luggage section is the rollover
protection. When a rollover threatens, spring-loaded aluminum braces
are raised behind the rear seat headrests. Head and chest sidebags
provide protection in the event of a lateral impact.

The interior
With
its generous wheelbase of 2.75 meters (9.02 ft) and the longest
interior in its class, the Audi A5 Cabriolet has plenty of room for
longer trips. That’s also true for the rear seats, which can be
optionally divided by a center console with two cup holders.

Elegance
in flowing lines, functional ergonomics, and top-quality craftsmanship
are the principal characteristics of the interior – and this too is
typically Audi. The teardrop-shaped settings of the instruments have
already become modern classics. The centrally mounted onboard monitor
is standard equipment. The formed-plastic console focuses on the
driver. Flowing lines link it to the central tunnel and the door
linings. If the customer has ordered either one of the two navigation
systems it comes with the highly convenient MMI operating system – the
best solution on the market.

The low standard seats provide
excellent control and support. Using seatbelts is facilitated by
electric seat belt extenders. Special solutions are available as
alternatives: firm sport seats, electric seat adjustment and heating –
as a separate option also for the back seats.

In the
climate-controlled comfort seats, small fans and an automatic auxiliary
heater ensure luxurious comfort. This option provides neck-level
heating – ducts on the topside of the seatback emit warm air that keeps
the back of the head and neck warm. With its three-level control, the
headroom heater is also available for sport seats. It prolongs the
open-air season in the Audi A5 Cabriolet.

Another special feature
is provided in the optional leather upholstery: a special coating
inhibits solar heating while the Cabriolet is parked in the sun with
the top down. This coating reflects infrared radiation and thus lowers
the surface temperature by up to 20 degrees Celsius. Audi offers a
choice of several seat coverings up to and including Fine Nappa
leather. Inlays come as standard in Micrometallic platinum; aluminum
and three different kinds of wood are available as options.

The engines
In
the propulsion system of the A5 Cabriolet too Audi has consistently
relied on innovative technologies: All five engines – the two TDIs and
the three gasoline engines – use direct injection. They are impressive
evidence that, at Audi, efficiency and dynamics go together and are
interdependent.

The most powerful gasoline engine in the Audi
A5 Cabriolet is the 3.2-liter FSI. It operates with the innovative Audi
valvelift system, which varies the lift of the intake valves in two
stages. As a result, the gas exchange improves and the throttle can be
left open more often, minimizing throttling losses – which in turn
boosts the torque and the power output while reducing fuel consumption.
The V6 delivers up to 195 kW (265 hp) as well as 330 Nm (243.4 lb-ft)
between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm. With front-wheel drive and multitronic it
accelerates the A5 Cabriolet in 6.9 seconds to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) –
and up to a top speed of 246 km/h (152.86 mph). Its average fuel
efficiency is an impressive 8.6 liters/100 km (27.35 US mpg). An
optional alternative is quattro all-wheel drive, combined with the new
seven-speed S tronic.

The 2.0 TFSI likewise attests to Audi’s
leadership position in engine design. This four-cylinder engine also
uses the Audi valvelift system – but here it acts on the exhaust
valves, with similar advantages as in the V6. Audi sells the two-liter
turbo in two versions. In the entry-level version, which comes with
front-wheel drive and multitronic, it delivers up to 132 kW (180 hp)
and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) from 1,500 to 3,900 rpm. This version
completes the standard sprint in 8.9 seconds and has a top speed of 219
km/h (136.08 mph). Average fuel efficiency is an excellent 7.4 liters
per 100 km (31.79 US mpg).

The more powerful version of the 2.0
TFSI delivers 155 kW (211 hp) as well as 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) between
1,500 and 4,200 rpm. It is available with three powertrain versions:
with the quattro drive package and the seven-speed S tronic, and with
front-wheel drive and either multitronic or manual transmission. In the
latter version the A5 Cabriolet reaches 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.5
seconds and has a top speed of 241 km/h (149.75 mph). Its average fuel
efficiency is an impressive 6.8 liters per 100 km (34.59 US mpg).

The
two V6 TDIs also set the standards in their class. With their enormous
torque and consistent running smoothness they represent the
leading-edge sportiness of Audi TDI technology. The three-liter engine
generates 176 kW (240 hp) and applies 500 Nm (368.78 lb-ft) of torque
to the crankshaft between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. The sprint from zero to
100 km/h (62.14 mph) takes 6.4 seconds. Top speed is 247 km/h (153.48
mph). This top-of-the-line diesel, which powers all four wheels via the
seven-speed S tronic, is content with an impressive average of 6.8
liters/100 km (34.59 US mpg).

The second TDI in the program is
even thriftier. The 2.7-liter powerplant with 140 kW (190 hp) and 400
Nm (295.02 lb-ft) between 1,400 and 3,500 rpm consumes a mere 6.3
liters/100 km (37.34 US mpg)*. The smaller V6 diesel comes with
front-wheel drive and manual transmission. It goes from zero to 100
km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.6 seconds; 230 km/h (142.92 mph) is its top speed
(preliminary values).

The transmission
Audi
provides a choice of three different transmissions for the A5
Cabriolet. The 2.0 TFSI with 155 kW (211 hp) comes with a six-speed
manual transmission as standard, which excels in its short shifting
travels and high operating precision. Both the two-liter engine and the
3.2 FSI are available with the multitronic continuously variable
automatic transmission as an option, which combines smooth operation
with high efficiency and a fuel-saving transmission ratio. For a
dynamic driving style the multitronic is available with a sport program
and a manual mode with eight fixed speeds.

For the more powerful
version of the 2.0 TFSI and for the 3.2 FSI, the seven-speed S tronic
is available as an option; in the 3.0 TDI it is standard equipment.
This new high-tech dual-clutch transmission changes gears in a few
hundredths of a second, and so smoothly that the driver hardly notices
it. What’s more, it is highly efficient and fuel-saving. The driver can
let the seven-speed S tronic shift automatically or interact, if
desired, via rocker switches on the steering wheel.

The
seven-speed S tronic has been designed for use with the quattro
permanent all-wheel drive. It is optionally available for the high-end
diesel series and for the two powerful gasoline engines. The quattro
drive system is dynamically designed – during normal driving it
distributes the forces in a 40:60 ratio between the front and the rear.
If one wheel skids, a center differential that operates purely
mechanically transfers most of the power to the axle with the better
traction.

The new sport differential makes the driving dynamics
of the quattro drive even more fascinating. This innovative control
system steplessly distributes the propulsive torques among the rear
wheels depending on the driving situation.

This form of torque
control makes the steering response of the A5 Cabriolet even more
spontaneous and direct and further improves the vehicle’s stability.
Transverse acceleration is further improved while understeering or
oversteering is completely prevented.

The chassis
The
Audi A5 Cabriolet leads its class in all relevant sporty criteria –
steering response, stability and agility – yet it provides a very
smooth ride. The reason for these strengths is the perfect distribution
of axle loads. The front axle is located far forward in the front
section – a configuration made possible by an unusual solution: the
differential is mounted in front of the clutch or torque converter.

The
chassis design too is technologically advanced: The front wheels are
mounted on a five-link axle. The front axle support is firmly bolted to
the body in order to maximize rigidity. The steering forces are
transmitted to the wheels directly via the steering box, which is
mounted very low within the chassis. The hydraulic rack-and-pinion
steering provides a very responsive and highly precise connection to
the road. Optionally available is the servotronic, which adjusts its
support level to the driving speed.

The rear-wheel suspension
of the Audi A5 Cabriolet is supported by a trapezoidal-link axle, which
combines a smooth ride and maximum driving stability. The essential
parts of both the front and the rear suspension are made of aluminum.
The large brakes ensure powerful deceleration and react very precisely
to the degree of pedal pressure. 16-inch or 17-inch aluminum wheels are
standard, depending on the engine version. Optionally available from
Audi and quattro GmbH are 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels.

Another
high-tech feature in the new A5 Cabriolet is the Audi drive select
vehicle dynamics system. It influences the characteristics of the fuel
feed, the speed change points of the seven-speed S tronic, and the
operating mode of the servotronic steering system. The driver presses a
key to select a comfortable, intermediate, or dynamic operating mode
for these subsystems. If the vehicle is equipped with a navigation
system – and the MMI operator control that comes with it – a fourth
engine map is provided, which the driver can program to suit.

Audi
drive select is only available in combination with one or more of three
additional technologies – the differential, the adaptive shock absorber
control, and dynamic steering. Its superposition gear varies the gear
ratio by nearly 100 percent as a function of the driving speed. The
dynamic steering operates directly in city traffic. In highway driving
it uses a more indirect ratio. To maximize driving safety, it
cooperates closely with the ESP stabilization program – at the handling
limits it keeps the A5 Cabriolet on course by lightning-fast small
interactions.

The equipment
The Audi A5
Cabriolet comes with an impressive array of standard equipment. This
includes a fully automatic convertible top, 16-inch or 17-inch alloy
wheels, a fold-down rear seatback with a large pass-through, and
automatic air conditioning; the chorus audio system comes with integral
CD player. Electric seat belt extenders and an electromagnetic parking
brake are also standard.

Further luxury is available in the
options: The adaptive light option combines xenon plus headlights with
dynamic cornering lights; the high-beam assistant changes automatically
between low beam and high beam. The advanced key provides keyless
access and allows starting the car as well as opening and closing the
top remotely. The deluxe automatic air conditioning manages the
temperature separately in three zones in the vehicle. The acoustic top
further lowers the wind noise level. And the climate-controlled comfort
seat in combination with the neck-level heating creates a perfectly
tempered environment.

When it comes to the chassis, the program
is complemented by the Audi drive select system, the sport
differential, and two conventional sport suspensions. The S line sport
package plus combines the stiff set-up with performance features such
as 10 millimeters less body height, 18-inch wheels and 245/40 tires
with a package of special details for the interior. The S line exterior
package, on the other hand, endows the vehicle with an especially
dynamic look.

Further highlights are the two infotainment systems
MMI navigation and MMI navigation plus – members of an entirely new
equipment generation. Even the lesser model includes navigation imaging
featuring 3D color graphics, a versatile reader for memory cards, and a
DVD drive. Optionally available from Audi is a module for digital radio
reception, a Bluetooth interface for the mobile phone, and an interface
for full integration of the iPod.

The top version comes with
exclusive technologies: an especially high-definition monitor, a big
hard drive for music files and addresses, plus a special joystick
function for the MMI control unit. With refinements such as a Bang
& Olufsen sound system or a digital TV tuner, the MMI navigation
plus can be turned into a high-end media center.

Innovative
assistant systems from the luxury class make driving in the A5
Cabriolet even more supremely relaxed. Audi optionally equips its
open-top four-seater with high-tech solutions including adaptive cruise
control, Audi side assist and Audi lane assist. They control the
distance from the vehicle in front and assist in staying in lane or in
changing lanes. The luxury-class Audi parking system advanced uses a
rearview camera to display the area behind the vehicle on the onboard
monitor.

The Audi S5 Cabriolet
The
top-of-the-line model of the new Cabriolet production series from Audi
is the S5 Cabriolet. The letter “S” stands for Sport – for dynamics,
performance and power, but also for amazing efficiency.

The Audi
S5 Cabriolet’s engine is a newly developed, supercharged, three-liter
V6. The pressure in the 3.0 TFSI is generated by a mechanical
supercharger – with impressive results: The power output tops out at
245 kW (333 hp), the torque between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm remains
constant at a generous 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft). The powerful thrust and
the spontaneous, aggressive response make for a fascinating driving
experience. The S5 Cabriolet is catapulted in 5.6 seconds from zero to
100 km/h (62.14 mph) and accelerates up to a preset top speed of 250
km/h (155.34 mph). Yet at 9.6 liters* per 100 km (24.5 US mpg), its
fuel efficiency is highly impressive (preliminary values).

Standard
equipment of the Audi S5 Cabriolet includes the servotronic, the
seven-speed S tronic and the quattro drive system package. The sport
differential is optional. A sport suspension keeps the body close to
the road. The 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are equipped with 245/40
tires. The black brake calipers are emblazoned with S5 emblems. The
acoustic top, xenon plus headlights, electrically adjustable sport
seats with Alcantara leather upholstery, and a multifunction sport
steering wheel are also standard equipment.

Diverse design
features contribute to a distinctively sporty styling, including
modifications at the lower front and back panels, at the air intakes
and at the tailpipes. In the interior, special seat upholstery, door
sill trims and inlays in matt brushed aluminum underscore the
high-quality, dynamic style of the high-end model. The pointers of the
instruments are illuminated white to contrast with the gray scales.

top-of-the-line model. With the R8, the brand has established itself at
the forefront of high-end sports cars from the very start – and now
comes the R8 V10. Its 5.2-liter, ten-cylinder engine churns out 386 kW
(525 hp) and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, which makes for
breathtaking performance. With superior Audi technologies such as
quattro all-wheel drive, the lightweight aluminum body, the innovative
all-LED headlights, and its striking design, the R8 V10 takes pole
position against the competition.

The R8 V10 is the result of cumulative
know-how from Audi’s string of Le Mans victories. Its naturally
aspirated engine combines racing technology such as dry sump
lubrication with FSI gasoline direct injection. The ten-cylinder design
is the perfect synthesis for impressive top performance, mighty pulling
power, and low weight. Starting in 2009, this engine will also prove
its potential on the world’s racetracks – in the new R8 racing car Audi
is developing for customer teams in conformance with the GT3 rules.

The
V10 engine in the production sports car will be almost identical in
construction to the one in the racing version. Its displacement is
5,204 cc, at 6,500 rpm it delivers 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, at
8,000 rpm its power tops out at 386 kW (525 hp).

The specific
power output is 100.9 hp per liter of displacement – and each hp has to
propel only 3.09 kilograms (6.91 lb) of weight, because the Audi R8 V10
in the version with the six-speed manual gearshift weighs only 1,620
kilograms (3571 lb). The engine accounts for 258 of these kilograms
(569 lb) – that’s only 31 kilos (68 lb) more than the V8.

The
Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro rockets from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in
3.9 seconds. In the version with the sequentially shifting R tronic it
reaches 200 km/h (124.27 mph) in another 8.1 seconds. Even then its
propulsive power hardly lessens: it’s sufficient to reach a top speed
of 316 km/h (196.35 mph). The immense force, the spontaneity and the
thrust of the acceleration, plus the sound of the engine – all these
impressions coalesce into a breathtaking sports car experience. The V10
plays a concert with growling bass tones and powerful high notes, which
grows into a grandiose fortissimo as the engine revs up. This sonorous
acceleration doesn’t reach its limit until 8,700 rpm.

The
5.2-liter powerplant uses direct injection according to the FSI
principle developed by Audi. A common rail system injects the fuel into
the combustion chambers with up to 120 bar of pressure. Direct
injection reduces the susceptibility to knocking and provides a certain
amount of cooling through the evaporation of the fuel, which in turn
supports a high compression ratio of 12.5:1. This in turn contributes
to superior performance and improves fuel economy. The R8 V10 with R
tronic gets by on an average of 13.7 liters per 100 km (17.17 US mpg).

For maximum dynamics: low center of gravity engine
The
technical refinements of the long-stroke ten-cylinder engine include
dry sump lubrication, which allows the engine to be mounted low within
the chassis. The wide cylinder angle of 90 degrees also makes for a low
center of gravity. The crankcase is a high-strength aluminum-alloy
casting produced in a complex process. The connecting rods are made of
forged steel, the pistons of aluminum. The four camshafts are
chain-driven and each is adjustable through 42 degrees. This provides
great latitude in controlling the valve timing. In combination with the
straight, flow-optimized ducts of the intake manifold, this improves
the charge throughout the entire speed range.

The R8 5.2 FSI
quattro has a six-speed transmission. A precise and smooth-shifting
manual transmission comes as standard equipment. The sequential R
tronic is available as an option. The high-tech gearshift conveys an
authentic racing feel – with the rocker switches at the steering wheel
and the short shifting times of usually less than one-tenth of a
second. When the driver actuates the Launch Control program by pressing
a button, the R8 V10 takes off in a vehement quick-start with
electronically controlled tire slip – both with the R tronic and with
the manual transmission.

A contributing factor to the wide lead
in traction and driving safety of the Audi R8 V10 over the competition
is quattro all-wheel drive – it’s the superior technology especially
for a high-performance sports car. Four powered wheels get more grip
than two. They enable the driver to step on the gas sooner when coming
out of a curve. It’s not only the traction that benefits, but also the
transverse dynamics and the stability.

44 to 56 percent – the ideal axle load distribution
The
Audi R8 chassis offers both dynamic performance and astonishing levels
of comfort on long distances. This high-performance sports car from
Audi eagerly responds to any steering action with instant ease,
achieves lateral acceleration of up to 1.2 g, and handles any situation
with superb driving safety. Its mid-engine design provides an ideal
axle load distribution of 44 to 56 percent.

The wheel suspensions
on dual aluminum wishbones front and rear – a classic racing technology
– are optimized for neutral self-steering characteristics. Even more
than in the eight-cylinder R8, this setup is designed for maximum
performance. 19-inch wheels equipped with tire pressure monitoring
display are standard equipment. Their 10-spoke Y design is exclusive to
the R8 V10. Tire sizes are 235/35 front and 295/30 rear.

The car
features a high-end damper technology as standard: Audi magnetic ride
adapts the characteristics of the suspension in milliseconds to the
nature of the road surface and to the driving style. Suspended in the
oil of the shock absorbers are tiny magnetic particles which, when a
voltage is applied, rearrange themselves so as to slow down the flow of
oil through the valves.

In the R8 V10, deceleration is provided
by an extremely muscular braking system – eight brake pistons at the
front and four at the rear grasp the brake disks, which are ventilated
and perforated to ensure unimpeded heat transfer. The brake disks on
the front axle have a diameter of 380 millimeters (15 in); the rear
discs span 356 millimeters (14 in).

The R8 5.2 FSI quattro is
optionally available with a ceramic brake system whose disks are made
of a composite material containing high-strength carbon fibers and
abrasion-resistant silicon carbide. These are especially light: their
combined weight is nine kilograms (19.84 lb) less than the weight of
equivalent steel disks. The ceramic brakes can easily cope with the
harsher requirements of racing, won’t corrode, and have a typical
service life of 300,000 kilometers (186,400 miles). Their calipers are
painted charcoal gray and emblazoned with the inscription “Audi
ceramic”.

Typically Audi: Sharp lines and an elegantly curved roof
The
wide, full shape of the R8 5.2 FSI quattro seems to hug the road. The
brawny proportions and prominent wheel wells underscore its potential.
The high-precision styling of the lines and the elegant curve of the
roof are typical Audi features. A continuous contour optically connects
the front, the wheel wells, the sides and the rear. Located well
forward, the cab visually expresses the mid-engine design. The vertical
air scoops (sideblades) on the sides are also indicative of the engine
location. The massive aluminum gas cap is mounted flush within the
right sideblade.

The design of the Audi R8 has already impressed
experts, as evidenced by the double victory in the “World Car of the
Year Awards 2008”. In the ten-cylinder model, the styling has been
sharpened up even more.

The front air inlets, which feed air to
the coolers, and the lip of the front apron are painted in high-gloss
black. The number of cross-braces has been reduced from four to two.
The vanes of the single-frame grille have a striking chrome finish.

A
very distinctive highlight of the R8 V10 are the all-LED headlights as
standard equipment. Audi is the world’s first automaker to use LEDs for
the high beam, low beam, daytime running lights, and turn signals. Each
headlight integrates 54 of these high-tech light sources. With a color
temperature of 6,000 Kelvin the LED light closely resembles daylight,
which is less tiring to the eyes in night driving. Further advantages
of the LEDs include brilliant illumination, low energy consumption, and
a virtually unlimited service life.

Special details also
distinguish the body of the R8 V10. Its sideblades are more accentuated
than in the eight-cylinder version. The side sills are more striking
and wider; the exhaust grilles at the rear windows have a matt aluminum
look. Through the large rear window, the ten-cylinder engine is clearly
visible in its consummate technical beauty.

When in motion, this
Audi high-performance sports car creates a downforce that keeps it in
firm contact with the road – thanks to a rear spoiler which deploys
automatically at 100 km/h and the fully enclosed underbody, which
terminates in a sharply upward-curved diffuser. The dominant color at
the rear end is high-gloss black, including the settings of the LED
tail lights. The air outlets at the rear end also have only two
cross-braces, and the exhaust system terminates in two large oval
tailpipes.

Audi sets the example – in body weight and rigidity
The
body of a sports car must be especially lightweight and rigid. Audi
meets these requirements with the technology of the Audi Space Frame
(ASF) and its high-tech aluminum construction. The body-in-white of the
R8 V10, which includes an engine frame made of ultra-light magnesium,
weighs only 210 kilograms (463 lb), and the quality of its lightweight
design – the relation of weight to torsional rigidity – is the best in
the sports car segment. The body is composed of profile extrusions,
sheet aluminum and very complex gusset castings, all held together by
99 meters (325 ft) of welding seams, 782 rivets, and 308 special screws.

The
interior of the R8 V10 provides a unique racing ambience at the luxury
level. Its dominant element is the so-called monoposto – a wide arc
that contains the steering wheel and the cockpit. As always in an Audi,
the workmanship is of the highest quality. The surfaces of the
dashboard and doors are lined with fine materials and adorned with
precisely stitched decorative seams. Many customizing solutions are
available: Audi supplies leather in a wide range of colors, packages
with a carbon and piano-lacquer finish, or a made-to-measure luggage
set. quattro GmbH, which has developed and is producing the R8 V10,
also provides solutions for unconventional requirements.

The
great everyday utility of the Audi R8 V10 is based in part on its
spacious interior made possible by the long wheelbase of 2.65 meters
(8.69 ft). Drivers and passengers of any size will always find a
perfect sitting position. Visibility too is surprisingly good. Slender
hinge pillars optimize the obliquely forward field of view. Another
advantage for convenient everyday use is the luggage space: 100 liters
(3.53 cu ft) fit under the front hood, another 90 liters (3.18 cu ft)
can be stowed behind the seats. There is also room for two golf bags.

The
Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro combines its colossal performance with a
generous complement of standard equipment. Highlights include heatable
seat covers made of Fine Nappa leather, a driver information system,
the navigation system plus and the Bang & Olufsen sound system
along with deluxe automatic air conditioning and an alarm system. The
instruments and the gearshift knob are decorated with red rings; the
footrests and the rocker switches of the R tronic have an aluminum
finish.

The list of options includes other highly attractive
features – such as the Audi parking system advanced with its integrated
rearview camera or numerous Audi exclusive customization options.
Various leather packages provide a luxurious touch, while the bucket
seats from the Audi exclusive program bring a highly concentrated
racing atmosphere into the R8 V10.

Audi Goes Frugal with the A4 Concept e

Efficiency is the way into the future – Audi is
introducing the current state-of-the-art for its fuel-saving
technologies at the Paris Auto Show. The A4 TDI concept e technology
concept has the agile handling characteristics typical of the A4, but
requires just 3.99 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (58.95 US mpg).
This exemplary result was possible through the concentrated use of
innovative efficiency modules.

Audi is committing major resources in order
to continue improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. The brand
is introducing a trend-setting technology concept at the Paris Auto
Show: the A4 TDI concept e offers the typically agile experience of
driving an Audi, yet it uses just 3.99 liters of fuel per 100 km (58.95
US mpg), which corresponds to a CO2 output of only 105 grams per km
(168.98 g/mile). With this near-production study, Audi demonstrates the
great potential of the technologies in its modular efficiency system.

The
powertrain of the Audi A4 TDI concept e uses a direct-injection TDI
engine with an output of 88 kW (120 hp) and 290 Nm (213.89 lb-ft) of
torque. It propels the sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 10.7
seconds, and tops out at 206 km/h (128 mph). An entire array of details
– from soft springs on the intake valves to a new thermal management
system – improves fuel efficiency. Intelligent technologies are used in
the engine’s functional environment as well, such as on the fuel pump
and on the automatic air conditioning’s compressor.

The
recuperation system is another fundamental component for improving fuel
efficiency. It recovers power when braking and coasting to a stop, and
temporarily stores it in a battery. A start-stop system switches the
engine off when the vehicle comes to a standstill. Magnesium was used
to reduce the weight of the six-speed transmission, which received an
insulating cover for faster warm-up and modified gear ratios.

Audi
uses an electromagnetic servo assembly for steering; electrically
actuated brakes are fitted at the rear. The 225/45 R17 tires have been
optimized for road resistance. Sophisticated fine-tuning measures have
improved the aerodynamics of the body. Two types of support are at the
driver’s fingertips: he can either call up an economy training program,
or have the navigation system calculate the most fuel-efficient route
to his destination.

Paris 2008: Audi A1 Sportback Concept

Audi is presenting another version of the innovative hybrid
technology in the drive unit for the A1 Sportback concept. At work
under the hood is a 1.4-litre TFSI engine developing 110 kW (150 hp),
whose power is directed to the front wheels by means of the S tronic
dual-clutch transmission. A 20 kW (27 hp) electric motor integrated in
the drive train is able to deliver up to an additional 150 Nm of torque
(110.63 lb-ft) when the vehicle is accelerating. During the boosting
phase, i.e. when the TFSI engine and electric motor operate
simultaneously to enable a sporty driving style, the two power packs
deliver impressive propulsion. The tried-and-tested front-wheel drive –
supplemented by the newly developed, ESP-controlled active front
differential lock – ensures optimum transfer of power to the road.

The
electric motor is furthermore capable of powering the vehicle alone for
zero-emission driving in residential areas, for instance. The capacity
of the lithium-ion batteries gives the vehicle a range of up to 100 km
(62.14 miles) in pure electric mode; the motor can be recharged from
any power socket. The automatic start/stop facility, energy
regeneration and phases of purely electrical operation reduce the fuel
consumption and emissions of the Audi A1 Sportback concept by almost 30
percent compared to when it is running on the combustion engine alone.
Despite its sporty performance, with acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h
(62.14 mph) in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h (124.27 mph),
the Audi A1 Sportback concept requires only 3.9 liters of premium fuel
per 100 km (60.31 US mpg); CO2 emissions are an efficient 92 g/km
(148.06 g/mile).

Exterior

The difference is not down to the
two extra doors alone: the styling of the five-door concept vehicle is
a consistent development of the three-door study, the Audi A1 project
quattro from the year 2007. Surfaces and lines are distinctly tauter
and more masculine.

The basic proportions, with a high vehicle
body and a flat window area bordered by a coupe-like roof line, produce
a virtually classic look for a vehicle bearing the four rings. The rear
end is rounded off by a two-part spoiler with a striking centre groove,
integrated into the rear window.

The side-on view presents
another typical coupe attribute in the form of doors with frameless
windows and a glass-covered and thus homogeneously integrated B-pillar.
The bold segmentation of the study's side paneling with its gently
rising shoulder line accentuates the styling.

The shoulder line
of the Audi A1 Sportback concept with its Daytona Grey paint finish is
a new interpretation of yet another trademark feature of the current
Audi design. Here, the prominent double lines continue around the
entire vehicle as a curvaceous band that links the front end – from
which it seems to emerge – with the vehicle's tail, which rises to
create a slightly wedge-shaped effect.

The aerodynamically
designed single-frame grille indicates the sporty ambitions of the
study, which are further emphasized by the flared fenders – a tribute
to the legendary Ur-quattro design and the current Audi RS 6.

The
design of the three-dimensional main headlights in innovative LED
technology is especially eye-catching. The completely new styling
underlines yet again the amount of freedom that this technology has
afforded to designers. All light functions – low‑beam and high-beam
headlights, daytime running lights and turn indicators – have been
located in one flat housing, in concentrically arranged, parallel and
squared-off strips.

The layout, with light segments of varying
sizes – the low beam taking up most space – completely changes the
character of the front section, the “face” of the A1 Sportback concept.

The
rear lights, too, continue this theme and combine the function of tail
and brake lights, turn indicators, reversing and rear fog lights into
an unmistakable design. The interplay of acute and obtuse angles and
the clear and colored glass areas create a particularly dynamic look. A
large-dimensioned, transparent cover over the entire width of the
vehicle additionally combines both light units and emphasizes the
horizontal design of the rear.

Like the three-door version, the
body of the four-door Audi A1 Sportback concept makes optimum use of
the small road surface area available to a vehicle from the premium
compact class. Measuring 3.99 m long (13.09 ft) and 1.75 m wide (5.74
ft) with a wheelbase of 2.46 m (8.07 ft), it succeeds in combining
sporty looks with impressive economy of space thanks to its short
overhangs. The transverse installation of the engine also has a
significant role to play in this respect. The third dimension of this
compact, sporty car – i.e. the height – comes in at 1.40 meters (4.59
ft).

The new update of their Audi A4 Driving Challenge game, which uses the tilt function of the iPhone to control the direction of driving sees a lot of the initial issues users had with the game fixed. Gone are the skittish controls which would see players zig zagging across the sometimes narrow track. In their place is an updated control which is a lot more fluid and, more importantly, has a sensitivity control within the games setting menu to further fine tune players reactions.

Also added are three extra bonus cars; Audi A4 2.0T, Audi A4 3.2 V6 Quattro and for those speed freaks amongst us - the Audi R8 - which are unlocked by completing various time locked bonuses There are four tracks in all, each with an increasing step up in difficulty.

Graphically there are also some detail changes such as a heads up map display which relays the players position on track - which comes in really handy as you can anticiapte corners. To counter the issues of not knowing where the track is going! To help judge the steering angle a neat little flat bottomed steering wheel is also added across the display bar, which reacts depending on how much turn you feed the iPhone via the tilt facility. Great!

The in game menus and track selection screens have all had a make over, too.

With the changes in place the game now has that 'just one more go' feeling - which is always a good sign for a pick up and go game like the A4 Driving Challenge.

The game update is available from Apple's iPhone App Store, located on the home screen of your iPhone. Alternatively you can also download the update from iTunes on your PC/Mac.

The New Audi S4 and S4 Avant - First Look

Audi is introducing its new sporty top models in
the midsize class – the S4 and the S4 Avant. Their engine, a
three-liter V6 with direct fuel injection and mechanical turbocharging,
delivers a powerful 245 kW (333 hp). It accelerates the S4 to 100 km/h
(62.14 mph) in just 5.1 seconds, but on average only uses 9.7 liters of
fuel per 100 km (24.25 US mpg). The quattro permanent all-wheel drive
system transfers its power to the road in style, which is then
converted by the sport suspension into dynamic handling. Upon request,
Audi can equip the new S4 and S4 Avant with innovative technologies
that further increase their lead over the competition. The seven-speed
S tronic changes gears with lightning speed, and the new sport
differential distributes the torque as needed between the rear wheels.
The new Audi S4 will be unveiled to the public for the first time at
the Paris Auto Show from October 2 to 19.

The heart of the new S4 and S4 Avant is a
completely redesigned engine. The 3.0 TFSI, the newest member of the
Audi V-engine family, is an outstanding example of how the brand with
the four rings blends performance and efficiency. The V6 generates its
power from a displacement of 2,995 cc, is equipped with a supercharger,
and delivers 245 kW (333 hp). The sedan sprints to100 km/h (62.14 mph)
in just 5.1 seconds, and the Avant in 5.2 seconds: they both have an
electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

The
“T” in the 3.0’s TFSI nomenclature no longer merely stands for “turbo”,
but rather for the concept of supercharging in general – extensive
testing on the big V6 has proven the superiority of mechanical
charging. In conjunction with direct injection it is far superior to
twin turbochargers, both in terms of packaging and of starting
performance and responsiveness.

The compressor is so compact that
it easily fits inside the 90-degree V of the cylinder banks, in place
of the intake manifold. Two four-vane rotary pistons counter-rotate
inside the turbocharger at up to 23,000 rpm. Two charge-air coolers are
integrated into the housing and are connected to a separate coolant
circuit. An impressive array of measures keeps the noise generated by
the compressor to a minimum.

The engine-driven belt that powers
the mechanical charger provides full thrust right from idling speed.
The 3.0 TFSI delivers its maximum 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) at 2,500 rpm
and maintains this constantly until 4,850 rpm. In fourth gear, the
vehicle accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h (49.71 to 74.56 mph) in just
4.4 seconds. Thanks to the extremely short gas paths, the sonorous,
supercharged V6 responds spontaneously to the throttle, even more so
than a naturally aspirated engine of the same displacement.

Furthermore,
the new 3.0 TFSI achieves exemplary fuel efficiency. On average, the
sedan uses 9.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (24.25 US mpg), and the Avant
9.9 liters per 100 km (23.76 US mpg) – an improvement of 3.4 liters (26
percent) compared with its predecessor. The Audi technology of gasoline
direct injection was what made this great efficiency possible in the
first place. Unlike conventional concepts, it allows the compressor to
be located behind the throttle valve. In view of the low density of the
intake air at loads below supercharging level and when coasting, its
rotors are free-running and the amount of power required to drive them
is low.

Dynamism and efficiency: The new seven-speed S tronic

The
V6 power in the new S4 and S4 Avant flows into a six-speed
transmission, fitted as standard, which shifts quickly and precisely.
As an option, Audi offers a state-of-the-art dual-clutch transmission –
the seven-speed S tronic is extremely dynamic and highly efficient. The
driver has the option of driving in fully automatic mode or selecting
the gears with paddles on the steering wheel or directly with the shift
lever – all of which provide impressively quick gearshifts. The
gearshift feel is dynamic, comfortable and very precise – typically
Audi.

The seven-speed S tronic consists of two separate
transmissions and uses two multidisk clutches that control the various
gears. The large K1 clutch guides the power via a solid shaft to the
pinions for gears 1, 3, 5 and 7. A hollow shaft rotates around the
solid shaft; it is connected to the compact K2 clutch, which is
integrated within its larger counterpart and controls the pinions for
gears 2, 4, 6 and reverse gear.

Both transmission structures are
continuously active, but only one is powered at a time by the engine.
For example, when the driver accelerates in third gear, the fourth gear
is already engaged in the second transmission structure. The shifting
process takes place as the clutch changes – K1 opens and K2 closes with
lightning speed. This process takes only a few hundredths of a second
and is completed without interrupting traction. It is so comfortable
and smooth that the driver hardly notices it.

The seven-speed S
tronic is designed for maximum efficiency. It operates with very high
efficiency and its intelligent control system maximizes fuel economy in
automatic mode. With its wide gear ratio spread of 8.0:1 the
seven-speed S tronic easily exploits the tremendous power and superior
torque of the 3.0 TFSI.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive
system transfers power to the road with supreme ease. Under regular
driving conditions, it sends 40 percent of its torque to the front
wheels and 60 percent to the rear wheels – a slightly rear-biased,
sporty characteristic. Where necessary, it can vary distribution within
fractions of a second.

The quattro drive system ensures safe
self-steering characteristics, high stability and excellent traction in
comparison with rear-wheel-drive competitors.

Customized torque distribution: The sport differential with Audi drive select

The
new, active sport differential ideally complements the quattro drive
system and lends it even greater fascination. When the steering wheel
is turned or the car accelerated in a corner, power is redirected in a
controlled manner to the outer rear wheel, literally pushing the
vehicle through the corner. The system intervenes to counter any signs
of understeer or oversteer. For the driver, this means reduced effort
at the steering wheel and even higher lateral acceleration.

The
active sport differential is a new type of rear-axle differential. A
superposition gear was added to both the left and right sides of the
classic differential; it rotates ten percent faster than the wheel’s
drive shaft.

Both components can be connected through a multidisk
clutch, which runs in an oil bath, and is operated by an
electro-hydraulic actuator. In most driving situations, the clutch can
divert almost the complete input torque to one wheel in this way.

Controlled
by an array of sensors and a high-speed computer, the active sport
differential needs less than 100 milliseconds to redirect power.
Drivers can adapt their manner of driving, along with characteristics
for the load changes, to three performance maps. Unlike competitors’
systems, the Audi sport differential is just as effective when the
engine is driving the wheels as it is on the overrun or when the car is
coasting freely.

The new Audi S4 and S4 Avant are well-trained
athletes. Their five-link front axle and the self-tracking
trapezoidal-link rear axle are of a highly sophisticated design; both
axles are made almost entirely of aluminum and are therefore very
lightweight. The low-mounted steering gear transmits the steering
forces to the wheels without any lag time and gives the driver a
precise and sensitive road feel.

The spontaneity of Audi’s new
midsize athletes is fascinating, and they possess the precise reactions
of a thoroughbred sports car. In these transmissions, the differential
is positioned in front of the clutch, which made it possible to move
the engine 154 mm (6.06 in) forwards compared with the predecessor
model. This unusual layout perfectly evens out the axle loads, and also
affords the long wheelbase of 2,811 mm (9.22 ft) exceptional stability.

The
chassis of both new S models received stiffer axle bearings, and the
sporty tuning with stiff shock absorbers puts the chassis 20 mm (0.79
in) closer to the road. Huge high-performance and fade-resistant brakes
sit behind the 18-inch and optional 19-inch cast aluminum wheels. The
black-painted brake calipers – at the front with the S4 logo – grip the
ventilated disks with newly developed brake pads.

Audi drive select: The driving dynamics system

The
Audi drive select driving dynamics system is a further high-end
technology featured on the new S4 and S4 Avant. It accesses the
throttle response characteristics, the shift points for the seven-speed
S tronic and supports the speed-dependent servotronic steering. With
the press of a button, the driver can decide whether these systems
should operate in “comfort,” “auto” or “dynamic” mode. If the vehicle
is equipped with the MMI operating system, a fourth mode is available
which the driver can program according to his own personal tastes and
preferences.

Audi drive select can only be ordered in combination
with one or more of three additional technologies – the sport
differential, adaptive control for the shock absorbers, or dynamic
steering, which is an additional high-tech solution. Its zero-play
superposition gear, which is driven by an electric motor, varies the
ratio by almost 100 percent depending on the speed being driven. In
terms of driver safety, the dynamic steering assists the ESP
stabilization program by using steering intervention to keep the new S4
and S4 Avant on track when cornering at the handling limits. In many
instances, the system renders ESP intervention superfluous.

For
the adaptive damper control system, hydraulic gas-pressurized shock
absorbers are used which operate by means of additional, electrically
actuated valves. They control the flow of hydraulic liquid, thus
regulating the shock-absorbing characteristics. A high-performance
control unit analyzes the signals it receives from 14 sensors, and
calculates the damping power for each individual wheel 1,000 times per
second.

An athletic look: The design

Both
the Audi S4 and the S4 Avant look athletic and muscular on the road.
Some of the most striking modifications to the exterior design are the
special aprons, the aluminum-look exterior mirrors, the 18-inch
S-design light-alloy wheels, the side rocker panels, the restrained
spoiler at the rear and the quadruple exhaust system. The xenon plus
headlights with daytime running lights and the rear lights are further
distinctive touches.

The interior also underscores the sporty
expertise that is the hallmark of both new S models. The sports seats
have electric lumbar supports and pull-out thigh supports, and the
instrument panel features gray dials with white needles. They also bear
the S4 emblems, as do the multifunction sport steering wheel and the
key. The interior is in black, with brushed aluminum inlays. Carbon and
birch wood inlays are also available, as are stainless steel mesh
inlays.

Optional assistance systems provide the driver with even
greater control on the road. The adaptive cruise control (ACC)
regulates the distance to the vehicle in front, and braking guard
issues warnings regarding possible rear-end collisions. The Audi side
assist makes changing lanes safer; the Audi parking system advanced
makes backing into a parking space easier.

With regard to
multimedia, Audi offers an attractive technology package. The
communications and entertainment technologies portfolio includes the
competition-beating MMI operating system, various types of radio and
sound systems all the way up to the high-end solution from Bang &
Olufsen, two navigation systems, an iPod interface, and a highly
convenient Bluetooth car phone.

Luxurious features such as the
three-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning and the dynamic cornering
light system known as adaptive light round out the optional equipment.

Audi will begin delivery of its new S models in March 2009.

Audi Launches Diesel Offensive in the US

The TDI is the world’s most successful efficiency
technology. Now the latest Audi TDI is making its way to the US: Audi
is introducing the world’s cleanest diesel to the streets of America
inside the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI with ultra low emission system. Once there,
and prior to its market launch, it will prove its supremacy when it
comes to driving fun and fuel efficiency in an endurance test – the
Audi Mileage Marathon.

The Mileage Marathon covers more than 4,800
miles – that’s over 7,700 kilometers – running from New York to Los
Angeles through major cities and passing countless natural wonders.
From October 5-20, 184 drivers from all over the world will do more
than just get to know a lot of fascinating roads during a total of 13
daily stages – they’ll also experience the confident sportiness and
extraordinary efficiency of the TDI models from Audi.

The big
real-world driving tour will be driven with 23 cars from four different
model lines, all examples of Audi’s characteristic combination of
superior mobility and unbeatable efficiency. Along with the
Audi Q7 3.0 TDI, the brand new Audi Q5 3.0 TDI will make its debut on
the wide roads of the North American continent. The Audi A4, the
sportiest sedan in its class, will also make its appearance with the
superb 3.0 TDI engine.

The Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI – equipped
with the innovative and particularly efficient S tronic transmission –
will add yet another highlight to the Mileage Marathon’s efficiency
statistics.

Efficiency is key over the long haul
The
route of the Audi Mileage Marathon leads across the American continent
from New York to Los Angeles, passing major cities like Chicago, Dallas
and Las Vegas during the 13 daily stages, as well as natural wonders
including the Rocky Mountains, Death Valley and the Grand Canyon. The
entire route totals more than 4,800 miles – over 7,700 kilometers –
with a realistic mix of city driving and rural driving on highways and
country roads. In this environment and under conditions that come close
to everyday driving, the TDI will be able to clearly show off its
superiority over every other efficiency technology.

Debut for the TDI with ultra low emission system
In
the Audi Mileage Marathon, the TDI with ultra low emission system will
be making its debut in a tough endurance test several months before the
planned market launch in the US and in Europe in 2009. This exhaust
emission control system reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 90 percent,
making it compliant with California’s LEV II BIN 5 – the world’s most
stringent emission standard. It also already exceeds the requirements
of the Euro 6 standards that are targeted for 2014. The Audi Mileage
Marathon will show that this doesn’t reduce the engine’s dynamism and
outstanding fuel efficiency.

With the latest generation of TDI,
Audi once again confirms its pioneering role in the world’s most
successful technology for fuel efficiency: when Audi started series
production of the first TDI, the engine was clearly a major technical
advancement. The TDI quickly became a synonym for superior propulsive
power and top efficiency, and set the trend for the entire automotive
industry. There is still no propulsion system that can beat the TDI
when it comes to high performance and actual fuel consumption.

Major potential to reduce worldwide consumption levels
Since
it features the lowest emissions, the TDI with ultra low emission
system can be employed worldwide, even in California and all other US
states that currently have the most stringent emission standards.
Compared with the fleet average of the gasoline engines typically found
in the US, the TDI achieves a fuel-efficiency advantage of up to 40
percent. This means that today’s diesel technology that is designed for
tomorrow can make a greater contribution than any other type of engine
to reducing the consumption of fossil fuels.

Part of an integrated efficiency strategy
Perfecting
the TDI is just one part of Audi’s integrated technology strategy to
further reduce CO2 and the emission of pollutants in all models. Audi
meanwhile relies on the outstanding potential of its state-of-the-art
combustion engines and on the components of its modular efficiency
system: with direct injection and turbocharging, the TFSI gasoline
engines and TDI diesel engines already provide convincing performance
with comparatively low consumption, while their innovative technologies
form a solid basis for further significant reductions of consumption in
coming years.

AUDI AG sold a total of 964,151 cars in 2007
and thus achieved its twelfth consecutive record year. With revenue of
€33,617 million and profit before tax of €2,915 million, the company
attained its best figures ever. Audi produces vehicles in Ingolstadt
and Neckarsulm (Germany), Györ (Hungary), Changchun (China) and
Brussels (Belgium). At the end of 2007, production of the Audi A6
started in Aurangabad, India. The company is active in more than 100
markets worldwide. AUDI AG’s wholly owned subsidiaries include
Lamborghini S.p.A. in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, and quattro GmbH in
Neckarsulm. Audi currently employs around 57,000 people worldwide,
including 45,000 in Germany. The brand with the four rings invests more
than € 2 billion each year in order to sustain the company’s
technological lead embodied in its “Vorsprung durch Technik” slogan.
Audi plans to significantly increase the number of models in its
portfolio by 2015 to 40.

technology – from the very top. Now the brand with the four rings is
presenting another world first: the first V12 TDI in a passenger
vehicle. The diesel, which generates an output of 368 kW (500 hp) and
1,000 Nm of torque (737.56 lb-ft) from a capacity of six liters, gives
the new Audi Q7 V12 TDI quattro the performance of a sports car. It
catapults from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in only 5.5 seconds and has
an electronically capped top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph).
The V12 diesel is opening up entirely new horizons in the diesel
sector. The big-performance SUV from Audi completes all intermediate
sprints with fascinating ease; in every driving situation it boasts
superior reserves of power. The engine captivates its drivers not only
with its sheer inexhaustible power but also with its highly cultivated
manner of operation – the subtle engine sound takes on a voluminous,
strong note when the throttle is open.
In terms of fuel consumption the six-liter TDI, which features a
completely redeveloped common rail injection system, requires an
average of only 11.3 liters/100 km (20.82 US mpg), substantially less
than the gasoline units produced by the competition. No competitor is
able to match this achievement.

Engine
The new twelve-cylinder TDI, produced at the Györ plant in Hungary,
is a member of the current family of V diesel engines from Audi, which
up to now was restricted to 6 and 8-cylinder units. As with other
inline engines, it has a spacing of 90 millimeters (3.54 inches)
between cylinder centers. Yet its included angle is 60 degrees, not 90
– the reason is that on this layout of V12, no free inertial forces or
mass moments of inertia can then occur. The results are refined in
every respect.

The 83.0-millimeter bore (3.27 inches) and
91.4-millimeter stroke (3.60 inches) of the twelve-cylinder are the
same as the 3.0 TDI, producing a total displacement of 5,934 cc. The
two cylinder banks are positioned opposite one another with an offset
of 17 millimeters (0.67 inch). Measuring 684 millimeters (26.93 inches)
in length the powerful engine is extremely compact, only 166
millimeters (6.54 inches) longer than the V8 TDI. This dimension was
the key prerequisite for integrating the V12 into the Audi Q7.

The
V12 TDI crankcase is made from cast iron with vermicular graphite – a
high-tech material referred to as GJV-450 that is already used on the
V6 and V8 TDI engines. GJV-450, made by a patented casting process, is
about 40 percent more rigid and 100 percent more fatigue-resistant than
gray cast iron. This enabled the developers to make its walls thinner,
cutting its weight by around 15 percent compared with conventional gray
cast iron. The crankshaft forged from chrome-molybdenum alloy steel is
mounted with the aid of an extremely rigid main bearing bridge made of
nodular cast iron. The forged connecting rods are cracked and the
pistons are made of aluminum.

The two cylinder heads are each
made from three main elements. The base section is made from a
high-strength, lightweight aluminum alloy, through which the coolant
flows and where the intake and exhaust ports are incorporated. Above
this are an oil-bearing upper section and a reinforcing ladder-type
frame supporting the two camshafts. The valves are actuated by
low-friction roller cam followers. The compression ratio is 16.0:1.

As
usual on the Audi V engines, the no-maintenance chain drive is mounted
on the reverse of the engine, where it occupies little space. However,
it has a new layout: the camshaft’s sprocket engages in an intermediate
gear via which two simplex chains drive the camshafts. Two additional

Hot on the heels of the recent MTM upgrade package for the Audi TTS, they've gone and done it again, this time turning their attention to the 4.2-liter V8 powered Audi R8 - Opting this time to fit a screw-type supercharger to the V8 as well as ECU and handling upgrades. As part of the specification the usual parts are also upgraded, as we see with the signature MTM bi-moto lightweight alloy wheels, this time pumped up to 20 inches, to accomodate those english county sized 380mm brake disks (rotors).

Performance is increased by a mere 130BHP over its stock counterpart and acceleration to 60MPH is also lowered as a result. No doubt the 100 lb/ft torque increase has a part to play, also.

Engine - V8 compressor with twin-srew belt driven supercharger

Capacity - 4163 cc

Drilling x Stroke - 84,5 x 92,8 mm

Densification (Compression) - 12.5 : 1

Gearbox - 6-speed manual gearbox

Power - 560 PS (412 kW) (552 BHP)

Torque - 580 Nm (427 lb/ft)

Max Speed - limited 187MPH (195 MPH with limiter removed)

Acceleration 0 -100/200 km/h: 3.9 sec./12.5sec

And, just in case you're wondering what all that gumph above sounds like....

This performance mode can be set by your Revo Technik dealer to suit your car, fuel quality and climatic conditions. Also included is an Anti-theft function, which is designed to disable the ECU itself leaving the car immobile. *
The select plus features variable boost, timing and fuel adjustment allowing the user to set the car up to run efficiently with any fuel quality and in varying conditions. Boost, timing and fuel adjustments can be uploaded directly to the ECU using the software communication mode via a laptop. The select plus offers three additional customised performance modes enabling the user to configure their own performance settings. It too has the anti-theft functionality.**

The answer is easy and still impressing: car - fast car - ABT RS6, as ABT Sportsline has set a unique benchmark in engineering: thanks to ABT Power the V10 TFSI delivers 700hp (515kW) - and that makes the RS6 a real super sportscar in an elegant but very useful clothing. For comparison: the serial RS6 achieves 580hp (426kW). The "station racecar" displays its maximum torque of enormous 800Nm (series: 650Nm) between 2400 and 6100 rpm. What does that mean? The ABT RS6 is at any time and in any situation a superior vehicle with an engine that belongs to the extremely fast ones thanks to its top speed of 310 km/h. Of course the currently most dynamic one of ABT Sportsline's car creations is easy to steer through daily traffic. The driver should, however, contain his leadfoot: beware when the ABT RS6 is unleased...

Suspension springs and lowering provide for optimal road holding; Christian Abt has checked the tuning with his legendary "buttometer" and has had a whole lot of fun: "The RS6 is breathtakingly fast; it shows how perfectly knowledge in the field of engine technology and racing experience blend together." Also when it comes to the body kit, both parts of the company - motorsports and car tuning - work closely together. So the rear wing is not only a beautiful add-on part for the super station wagon, it also reduces the lift of the bodywork. Striking style elements are the front spoiler, a highly dynamic "carbon-blade" and the 4-pipe-rear muffler typical for ABT in matt black finish. The dynamic BR wheel rim in extravagant 20 inches suits the Allgäu super station wagon particularly well. This makes the RS6 look very sporty and unique; still, the agile 700hp are not too apparent: the ABT RS6 is surrounded by an air of understatement, as its spectacular riding qualities only show on the road. The RS6 is a benchmark set by ABT Sportsline.

Engine Data and Facts
Engine: V10 TFSI, 4991cc engine capacity
Performance upgrade: ABT Power
Performance: 700hp/515kW (series: 580hp/426kW)
Rated torque: 800Nm between 2400 and 6100 rpm (series: 650Nm between 1500 and 6250 rpm)
Top speed: 310km/h (series: 250km/h, limited)

Audis RS6 gets a power hike from B&B

Seemingly as if the 5.0-liter FSI twin turbo V10 powered New Audi RS6 wasn't in need of more power, Audi Tuning guru's at B&B Automobiltechnik have raised the bar with their latest upgrade for the range topping Audi Saloon and Estate. In standard form the 5.0 litre engine, derived from the Lamborghini Gallardo, pumps out a not to be sniffed at 580BHP which by any standards makes the Audi pretty quick. So when B&B fettled about and wound up hitting 715BHP we just had to find out what they've done to wring those extra horses out of the engine.

Rather than adopting the usual turbo upgrade package, which other tuners usually turn to for raising the power stakes, B&B instead opeted for a high flowing racing exhaust and uprated air intake, coupled with upgraded intercooling and the all import ECU mapping. All of which culminates in a 135BHP increase over stock figures. Paper based figures are great, but what we want to know is how it's like out on the open road. As usual B&B also released some acceleration figures, showing their upgrade can now propell the new Audi from 0-100km/h in a super car biting 3.6 seconds. Making it just under one second quicker than its standard counterpart.

– with its twin-turbo V10 and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, the
Audi RS 6 is a car without equal. Following on the heels of the RS 6
Avant, Audi now presents the sedan. It drives like a supercar thanks to
its superior performance and thrilling dynamics, yet offers all of the
everyday utility of a large business sedan.

The engine of the new Audi RS 6 is a
high-tech work of art. The 4,991 cc V10 bundles a number of Audi’s
race-winning technologies – FSI direct fuel injection, dry-sump
lubrication and two turbochargers. With up to 1.6 bar of boost
pressure, these provide smooth, powerful thrust and an incomparable
power band: The peak torque of 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) is available from
1,500 to 6,250 rpm and thus nearly over the entire rev range. Peak
power of 426 kW (580 hp) is generated between 6,250 rpm and the maximum
figure of 6,700 rpm.

With a power-to-weight ratio of 3.4
kilograms per hp, the Audi RS 6 performs like a supercar. It catapults
to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.5 seconds on its way to an
electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph), which can be
optionally raised to 280 km/h (173.98 mph). The V10 responds
immediately and spontaneously to the throttle, and is very smooth while
accelerating with a powerful roar.

The engine’s power flows
through the six-speed tiptronic, one of a new, dynamic generation of
Audi automatic transmissions. Its reaction time has been reduced to one
tenth of a second, shift time has been halved compared to units used in
other models and transmission ratios are short. The driver can also
manually change gears either using the shift lever or the paddles on
the steering wheel. The tiptronic transmission transfers the power to
an extremely sporty, rear-weighted quattro drive train.

Precision high-tech suspension

The
technology bundled into the suspension of the Audi RS 6 guarantees an
amazing performance experience. The front axle features four
lightweight aluminum control arms per wheel, whose elastokinematics
have been designed for particularly sporty performance. The
characteristics of the speed-dependent servotronic power steering were
retuned and the steering gear ratio is a direct 12.5:1. The rear
suspension kinematics have also been modified.

The development
engineers have also deployed an exclusive damping technology: Dynamic
Ride Control DRC reduces pitch and roll using purely mechanical means.
Hydraulic lines and valves connect diagonally opposed pairs of shock
absorbers. When cornering, the flow of fluid to the damper of the
compressing outside front wheel increases, providing firmer support and
reducing roll. When combined with the sports suspension plus, DRC
offers a choice of three selectable damper settings – sport, dynamic
and comfort – which can be activated via the MMI.

The
electronic stabilization system ESP offers maximum driving fun with
uncompromised safety. Its relatively high activation threshold
encourages a dynamic driving style. It offers a Sport mode and can also
be deactivated entirely.

The new Audi RS 6 rolls on 19-inch alloy
wheels shod with 255/40 tires. Up front, six-piston fixed aluminum
calipers – painted black and decorated with RS badges – clamp down on
390 millimeter brake disks. The rear brake disks measure 365
millimeters in diameter. The rear axle features single-piston floating
brake calipers. The floating steel disks feature large cooling ducts
and axial perforations for enhanced performance and less weight.

9.5J
x 20-inch wheels are offered as an option. These allow the use of a
ceramic brake system. The 420 (front) and 356 (rear) millimeter disks
weigh a total of 12.2 kilograms (26.90 lb) less than the steel disks.
The calipers – up front with eight pistons – are painted anthracite and
labeled “Audi ceramic.”

The body of the 4.93 meter (16.17 ft) RS
6 also sports a number of distinctive features that immediately
identify it as a dynamic, top-of-the-line model. These include the
single-frame grill, the air intakes, the headlights featuring xenon
plus, adaptive light and RS 6-specific LED daytime running lights, the
flared fenders and deep side skirts, the rear diffuser, the spoiler
integrated into the trunk lid and the two large oval exhaust pipes.

The finest of materials and uncompromised quality

Like
all Audi RS models developed and built by quattro GmbH in cooperation
with AUDI AG, the RS 6 is the embodiment of power, elegance,
exclusivity and perfection. The interior is adorned with the finest of
materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum, piano lacquer, leather and
Alcantara in tried-and-tested Audi quality.

The deeply sculpted
sports seats provide optimal support and firm hold. The
power-adjustable seats are upholstered in Silk Nappa leather, with
leather/Alcantara and Valcona leather available as options. Bucket
seats with an even more sporty emphasis are also offered for both
driver and front passenger. Standard equipment includes the dual-zone
deluxe automatic air conditioning plus, a parking assistant at front
and rear, an RS leather multifunction sports steering wheel with
flat-bottomed rim and a Bose surround sound system. A boost pressure
indicator for the two turbochargers in the driver information system
rounds out the instrumentation.

The options are also pure
hi-tech: Audi lane assist helps to keep the car in its lane, adaptive
cruise control maintains a constant distance to the car ahead and Audi
side assist helps the driver change lane safely. The Audi Bluetooth car
phone integrates perfectly with the driver’s cell phone to make even
using the phone a luxurious experience. It is integrated into the
standard MMI operating system, a new generation of which is making its
debut in the Audi RS 6.

The Audi RS 6 will be launched on the market in mid-October. The starting price in Germany including VAT is 105,550 euros.

Audi has again upgraded its luxury class A6 model. Efficient engines
have been added to the drive-train lineup, with innovative technologies
cutting fuel consumption by about 15 percent across the whole model
range. An improved suspension and new high-tech assistance system give
the driver even greater control over the car. And the new-generation
MMI control system is out-performing itself. The revamped A6 will be
launched in the German market in late summer.

It’s the sportiest and most popular
business sedan on the market. The Audi A6 is leading the Premium C pack
– both in Europe and around the world. In 2007, Audi sold about 234,000
units, giving the A6 a 37 percent market share among its core
competitors. Most of the A6’s sold were equipped with six- or
eight-cylinder engines, permanent 4x4 quattro and a luxury assortment
of optional equipment – all evidence of the high regard Audi
technologies is enjoying worldwide.

Its design is emphasized by a
range of bold new accents, perfectly articulating the A6’s strong
personality. The single-frame grill, bumpers, air vents and fog lights
have all gotten a facelift.

The optionally-available xenon plus,
LED daytime running lights have been redesigned as horizontal strips
with 6 LEDs each. Other options include Audi adaptive light, a dynamic
cornering light system, and the high-beam assistant that automatically
switches between the high and low beam.

An aluminum-colored
molding traversing the sides emphasizes the A6’s dynamic contour. At
4.93 meters (16.17 ft) long, 1.86 meters (6.10 ft) wide, and 1.46
meters (4.79 ft) high, little has changed in the sedan’s generous
proportions. The gentle lip on the trunk, integrated chrome strip on
the bumper, broad diffuser and straight exhaust pipes are part and
partial of the revamped rear end. The bipartite rear lights with LED
technology have also gotten a new look: narrow and wide, they taper
inward on the sedan. And there are 13 exterior colors to choose from,
including five new ones.

The A6’s spacious interior with its
clean and elegant contours and perfect craftsmanship is characteristic
of this luxury brand. The rear seats are extremely comfortable and the
L-shaped headrests improve the driver’s rear view visibility. As an
option, the back seats can be fitted with a comfortable 2-seater bench.
A package of elaborate features makes sure the noise level is cut by
almost half, particularly within critical frequency ranges.

The
instrument panel uses new higher-resolution graphics; and a new frame
better accentuates the display (color in the optional MMI navigation
system). Tastefully-appointed chrome trim, even on the spokes of the
steering wheel, call attention to its overall elegance and inlays are
available in either aluminum look or fine woods.

As is expected
of an Audi, the interior designers have made sure all the colors and
materials match. Standard seats can be optionally upholstered with a
new material; the sport seats are available in Valcona leather. Soft
armrests on the doors increase comfort, while the integrated headrest
system reduces the danger of whiplash.

Audi is now offering an
S-line sports package for the most dynamic of drivers. The package
includes enhanced performance features like 18-inch wheels and sports
suspension that lowers the ride height by 30 millimeters (1.18 in). Its
sporty seats, decorative inlays and upholstery give the black-trimmed
interior a feeling of even more exclusivity and the S-line exterior
package provides more drama. Features from this Audi exclusive program
are tailor-made to fit the A6’s luxury-seeking mavericks.

One of
the major strengths of the A6 lies in its broad selection of engines:
six gas and four diesels use direct fuel injection and cutting-edge
FSI, TFSI and TDI technologies in a choice of four, six or eight
cylinders. Whether stick shift, convenient tiptronic or high-efficiency
multitronic, the energy literally flows to the front wheels, or all
four wheels for that matter. Its engines are both powerful and
efficient. New measures have been introduced to optimize engines and
minimize fuel consumption without sacrificing one ounce of driving
pleasure. Fuel consumption over the whole A6 family has been lowered by
about 15 percent.

The smallest gas engine is the 2.0 TFSI, a 125
kW (170 hp) turbocharged four-cylinder unit. On the other end of the
spectrum is the 4.2 FSI, a 257 kW (350 hp) V8 engine. Audi V6 models
can be equipped with one of its two new 2.8 liter FSI engines; the 140
kW (190 hp) or the 162 kW (220 hp). Both engines feature the innovative
Audi Valvelift System (AVS), which manages the inlet valve timing so
that there is more torque and less fuel consumption. Regardless of
which 2.8 FSI engine the A6 sedan is fitted, average fuel consumption
is only 8.2 liters per 100 kilometers (28.68 US mpg) for the 190 hp,
6-speed manual shift or 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers (28.00 US mpg)
for the 220 hp multitronic CVT.

With its 3-liter displacement and
213 kW (290 hp) power output, the V6 is a particularly exciting
newcomer. Audi has designed the perfect package for each one of its
engine. That’s why the 3.0 TFSI is fitted with a supercharger. From now
on “T” doesn’t just stand for turbocharged – it stands for
supercharged. Supercharger technology does not mean increased
consumption – but the short intake paths do mean instantaneous
response. And it’s got full power build-up even at low engine speeds:
from 2500 1/min to 4850 1/min, the torque curve is broad and flat at
420 Nm (309.78 lb-ft).

The 3.0 TFSI comes with tiptronic and
quattro drive train. The A6 sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14
mph) in 5.9 seconds and keeps on going as it presses to its
electronically-regulated maximum speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). This
is the kind of performance that only an eight-cylinder engine would
have been able to deliver a few years ago. At 9.5 liters per 100
kilometers (24.76 US mpg) on the EU cycle, the supercharged V6 is
amazingly economical. The 3.0 TFSI’s combination of dynamic performance
and low consumption is one more example of Audi’s successful efficiency
strategy.

The A6 TDI engines give further evidence of just how
closely Audi has been able to align sporty performance and efficiency.
Fuel is delivered by the extremely sophisticated and quiet system of
common rails with rapid-action piezo injectors and an injection
pressure of 1800 bar (26,106.79 psi). The two V6 TDI engines (2.7 TDI
with 140 kW (190 hp) and 3.0 TDI with 176 kW (240 hp) have peak torques
of 380 Nm (280.27 lb-ft) and 450 Nm (331.90 lb-ft), respectively.

At
the lower end of the diesel program is the four-cylinder 2.0 TDI
engine, which is available in two versions: the 125 kW (170 hp),
expected in fall 2008, and the 100 kW (136 hp). The basic version is an
especially efficient e-model known as the 2.0 TDIe, which uses a
six-speed manual shift or automatic multitronic transmission to deliver
320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque to the front wheels. With multitronic
it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 9.9 seconds, and continues
on to a top speed of 204 km/h (126.76 mph). Yet its average fuel
consumption with a manual shift gearbox is only 5.3 liters per 100 km
(44.38 US mpg), equivalent to CO2 emissions of app. 139 grams per
kilometer (224 grams per mile).

The key to achieving such
exemplary values is the strategic deployment of innovative
technologies. The power steering pump operates on demand; the
alternator regenerates electrical energy when coasting thereby reducing
load off the engine. By lowering the ride height by 20 millimeters
(0.79 in) and other aerodynamic fine-tuning, the drag coefficient has
been reduced to cD = 0.28.

The transmission can be used longer in
the upper two gears. Any manual-shift A6 with Driver Information
System, even the 2.0 TDIe, can opt to have the shift indicator
displayed in the instrument panel. The icon lets the driver know which
gear is most economical under actual circumstances.

Audi quattro
four-wheel drive is available on all engines with 140 kW (190 hp) or
above and is standard equipment on high-end aggregates. The manual
shift, 140 kW (190 hp) 2.8 FSI notwithstanding, this is the very latest
generation quattro with the newly emphasized rear-end design. It gives
the A6 tremendous driving characteristics, remarkable grip and superior
safety. Under normal conditions, the torque split is 40 percent to the
front wheels and 60 percent to the rear. The mechanically-operated
Torsen differential immediately diverts most of the power to the axle,
providing better traction whenever the need arises – in extreme cases,
up to 65 percent to the front or 85 percent to the rear.

In
fine-tuning the A6, two key objectives were identified – increasing its
comfort while retaining its sporty character. With new large-diameter,
front-axle shock absorbers operating within an optimized valve system,
Audi engineers were able to achieve both goals. Every other aspect of
the suspension set-up has been improved, including the automotive
spring response.

The A6 can be equipped with factory-fitted
adaptive air suspension so that the driver can vary his response and
the characteristics of the adaptive shock absorbers into three styles.
High-powered engines come equipped with larger 17-inch wheel brakes.
Audi can also be fitted with a tire pressure monitoring system, which
is entirely wear-free and maintenance-free. The customer can opt for
run-flat tires, which limit the car to 50 kilometers (31 miles) should
there be a drop in air pressure.

Audi has integrated several new
high-tech assistance systems. The new Audi side assist kicks in to help
drivers when changing lanes at speeds over 30 km/h (18.64 mph),
ensuring a stress-free and superior drive. Using radar sensors, Audi
Side Assist is able to detect other cars up to 50 meters (164.04 ft)
away: a signal on the outside mirror lights up should changing lanes
pose a threat. Audi lane assist helps keep drivers in their own lane,
radar-assisted adaptive cruise control keeps a steady distance to the
vehicle ahead, and Audi parking system advanced has a rearview camera.

Since
its debut in 2002, the Audi Multi Media Interface system (MMI) has been
setting the standard for perfectly controlling any number of functions.
The A6 comes equipped with the latest MMI generation, including the
top-of-the-line MMI Navigation plus. Its basic construction has not
changed. The central control knob can still be found on the middle
console between the front seats and the operation is still carried out
using large buttons. The new joystick capping the control knob means
the MMI Navigation plus can be operated even more intuitively.

MMI
Navigation plus is an ultimate solution, pioneering in an entirely new
system generation with high-tech portfolio and ground-breaking
standards. Special features include a CD/DVD/Navigation combination
drive with a 40 GB hard drive capacity which can be used to store MP3s
and up to 5000 addresses.

With its 7-inch, high-resolution
screen, the monitor on this ultimate navigation system is truly
innovative. The image is rich in contrast and incredibly sharp even
under difficult lighting conditions. It also has an optional TV tuner
that receives digital programs (DVB-T) in perfect quality.

The
new navigation system has another innovation. A new bird's eye picture
mode shows landscapes in topographical relief – in full detail,
complete with three-dimensional images of landmark buildings. The
monitor has a new operating principle: when adjusting specific
functions like air conditioning or seat heating, a pop-up window
appears at the right rather than taking over the whole screen.

Most
of the new features found in the A6 sedan and Avant are also present in
two other models: the versatile A6 allroad quattro and the dynamic S6.
The A6 allroad quattro can be powered either by the new 213 kW (290 hp)
3.0 TFSI engine or one of the two powerful V6 TDI diesels. The V10 on
the S6 has 320 kW (435 hp). Changes made to the sports model are
limited to interior and exterior optical details.

The upgraded
Audi A6 will be available in German dealer showrooms as of mid-October
2008. Starting at 34,200 Euros for the A6 2.0 TFSI sedan, Audi’s
initial list prices have remained virtually unchanged, despite all the
extensive innovations.
